The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Change Comes After Lukewarm Response

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the necessity for a distinct vision.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full content from Ismailer's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a sharper brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our audience.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. After some time of discussions, Ben officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most well-known series in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to keep seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Face the competition with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your group can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."

The game does not have an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as creation continues.
