Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
