European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
